PHP version selector and not php slot selector

Hello.
I great improvement would be an abstraction layer that every domain can select a PHP Version to work with.
At this moment, a user selects a PHP slot from options.conf but if we need (for example) replace php1 because it is default system php version and move this release to php3, all working website could break. I know that we can "search&replace" php versions using a bash script in config files but the point is that DA could use an abstraction layer to fix a domain to a php version and not to a php slot.
